A Buffalo in Winter

Yellowstone NP

I shot this guy in Yellowstone a couple of years ago. I also have seen a very large print in Park City Utah of a Buffalo emerging from a fog/snow bank. I have been trying to reproduce it in Photoshop. This is one of my many versions, with a little assist from Gemini.

Thanks. I tend to like this version a lot; though it shows more of the body than the photo I saw in Park City. That photo was all head, and had been printed to about 6 ft tall, and had a spotlight shining on the head as well.

It certainly looks believable to me. Paul

The buffalo was shot Aug 5, 2023 at 11:30 am in Yellowstone NP. It was a beautiful sunny day with no snow, only flowers. I started post processing the buffalo to look like what I saw in Park City probably in Dec 2023, and made other efforts off and on in 2024 and 2025. In Photoshop, I made multiple layers of smoke and snow using various brushes and blending some of the layers as I went. I liked a couple of those that I did. This particular one was created using Gemini 3.0 Pro (Nano Banana) to touch up one of my PS processed ones; mostly adding snow to the face.

Excellent (my wife saw it from a distance and asked if it was an xray).

Was this entered in a challenge? If it was and didn't win, then something was amiss.

Did you shoot it in August (guessing not), or was that just a processing date?

This is a superb photo. I could see this very image on a Yellowstone wall above a fireplace with roaring fire in it. It should be above the fireplace in your own home or am I forgetful and you don’t have a fireplace…..

Repeat! This is a superb photo. Paul
