Great shot. And terrifying.

I captured a shot a few years ago when they were approaching one another with a closing speed of over 500 mph. They were more than a few ft apart, but not much more. Bottom line -- these pilots, men and women, are really really good.

When the Blue Angels were in town a few years back I had the opportunity to attend a presentation at a small Boy Scout event where the #4 (slot) pilot came and spoke too the group of kids. Naturally the ultimate goal of the presentation was recruiting, he kept stressing “if I can do it you can do it”. My thoughts were “yea right”, only the best of the best are flying those highly advanced fighter jets. Anyway he told the kids that in certain formations they are about 18 inches wingtip to wingtip. Tails were not touching, but I have a few as the went by that showed them only a few feet in depth apart.

Maybe not that tight in three dimensions.
