14 Total Lunar Eclipse

.
.
I kind of, sort of, wished I had more height with this resulting image...but there were 61 shot in cold crisp conditions and you have to pick and choose...I guess, I am thinking on it still.

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Wait! There are seven. I just needed to click on the large size. Thanks for the tip, Dorothy.

Jim, I could swear I saw a previous posting that included five (5) moon images.

I've done a general critique of my efforts:

This was, however, a miserable shoot...temp in so cal was 44 degrees, the eclipse lasted a full 6 hours...there was intermittent clouds so you had to keep checking for a clear line of sight...

But it was the almost uselessness of both of my tripods that was so vexing...how do you get your eye to the camera eyepiece when it is dead vertical to the ground and attached to a tripod? Can't be done, at least, not by me.

Then there was the cutting of the images...different angles in the sky, different apparent sizes even as the moon's distance from the earth doesn't vary much (6%)...proportionally that sucker kept moving across the dark sky...lol....how to make them all look relatively the same size (when in fact they were not)?

I am glad I did it...but it was certainly over two days, more work than I expected for a single resultant image.

Best Wishes, Traveller

Dave - if you were referring to my comment, my numbers referred to the photo number. I started with the far left and called that #1. Next was #2, etc. Photo #5 is the full coverage shot.

Five? I only see three.

I found the infinity mark is not very accurate and temperature dependent. When I found good focus I switched off auto focus and shot away. Not always successful I might add. Late at night dew point became a problem too. I’d be shooting star trails and all of a sudden I’d notice all my shots were fuzzy and blurry… huh??? Oh crap the dew point hit and unless you have a dew cap it’s time to pack it in for the night. Paul

I'd be happy with these as well.
White balance on 3,4 & 6 are difficult to get some red showing.
5 is perfect.

Thanks, Jim...but when you do a major effort, you frequently are never satisfied. I am feeling a little better now about this. thanks again...Traveller

Another 2 hours? Already looks good to me. What's there to improve?
Canon Image Challenge15-Mar-2025 14:43
What lens did you use? Couldn't you just set it at infinity and manual focus?

While I'm complaining...the last 4 images were hand held...shooting vertically into the night sky from a tripod seemed impossible to me...yes there is the flip out screen, but I couldn't get it to focus in this really low light so I had to do it with my eyeballs are braced arms. Traveller

Good Thinking Paul...that sounds like the right way to do this...but in shooting the event...trying out how to size and place these images...I've got another 2 hrs probably in processing....I need a break...but your idea is good, I have the originals. Thanks again, Traveller

I remember the last time I did an eclipse I started with a black pallet and arranged the individual photos in a arc from lower left up to the top center of the frame then back down to the lower right. Been too long since I did that to remember exactly all the steps I used to achieved it. But it made it where it wasn’t a mile long, just 3/8 of a mile or 600 ish meters for those of you that use metric. Paul.
