The Elephant

OK, you're going to have to use your imagination for this one.

This grafted bush/tree was here when we purchased the house and, remarkably, has grown barely if at all since then.

Our daughter loves elephants. She was seven when we moved here and quickly dubbed it the "marching elephant". We adults saw the elephant part easily enough but had to have the marching part explained. She had noticed that it looked different as the sun moved across the sky. The power of a child's observation.

I particularly like seeing it backlit by strong morning sunshine. Such was the case on Monday. Nature puts on shows for us all the time. It's up to us to stop and appreciate them.

The low-voltage outdoor lighting and timer box are included for Paul's particular enjoyment. Springing ahead tomorrow.

There are bulbs with pins and bulbs with, um, blades due to different kind of fixtures (round and rectangular floods in addition to the mushrooms shown here). Bulbs are easy to find (including at auto parts stores). I have never heard of bulb grease and will look into it. Thanks for the tip.

The socket bases are probably wearing out from age, heat and moisture. If they are still in good shape use bulb grease every time you replace a bulb and that will help keep corrosion at bay. I always had antioxidant compound on hand since it’s required anytime we terminated aluminum conductors and used it for bulb grease too. Works as well and much more affordable.

By the way virtually every style of bulb socket (high voltage or low voltage) is replaceable and generally not very difficult to do. Paul

My daughter was a big Snuffy fan and at seven was still watching Sesame Street occasionally.

There is a panoply of bulb types, and some of the fixtures use different styles. I'm mostly exhausting the box of bulbs we inherited when we moved in. I've purchased some LED but find they don't last long. They either suffer from water intrusion (yes, I'm purchasing bulbs rated for outdoor use) or their contacts become rusty (yes, I try to scrape them). We're putting off replacing the transformer/timer/light sensors. One day we'll have to bite the bullet. A new driveway is a higher priority this year.

When you said elephant the first thought that came to my mind was Snuffleupagus (I had to look that up to get the spelling accurate). It looks like snuffy if you ask me.

Have you converted all the PAR 36, 1141 and MR-16 bulbs to LED or staying with xenon and incandescent. That transformer would be 5 times bigger than necessary by today’s LED standards. I think I still have a box of 1141’s leftover from retirement. Paul
