15 Runners at Play

Boulder

This is a fun venue for a get-together. There are different food trucks each day, and a great bar with a big selection of local beers, and plenty of spirits, to raise the spirits.

I see the light sweater man looking right at the camera.

I'm torn between whether the gray-haired man in the light sweater's look is a reaction he is having to his conversation with the man whose back is to the camera or to the camera's invading his space. The woman with the hairband who is looking at the camera very much resembles a college classmate of mine.

A quick Coda to my Film recommendation: How did the world get from the obvious Joy, Good Sportsmanship, Good Fellowship and fine feelings displayed at the 1936 Olympics to a world ending war just 3 years later? (of course I know the obvious answer, but still...) Traveller

Alastair...a very, very great film is on TCM this month...Olympia Part One: Festival of the Nations...by Leni Riefenstahl of course....the first 10 minutes in ancient Greece is so-so, but when Hitler comes on to open the games....just utter fabulous. Hitler does come off well, his voice richer and with better timber than in the Newsreels...the British, USA and Nazi flag going up all at once and together is...weird.

But beyond these oddities, you are at the 1936 Olympics...and in beautiful pre-war Berlin.

However, I write this to you mostly because of all the running sequences, especially the closing of the film with the runners marathon...unbelievably great! Seriously. (Japan won, Jesse Owens and others were treated well throughout). Best Wishes, Traveller

Alastair,
I think it would have been hard to stage him better than this.

Thanks guys, and thanks for the comparison with Dorothea Lange. She's one of my favorite photographers. When we were in Washington DC last year, we went to a special exhibit of her work at the National Gallery. I was going for that kind of look to the shot (with the toning), even though most people were having fun. I like shots where one person looks out of place. He was, in fact, having fun most of the time, but I think I just caught him in a pensive moment.

T - I read Alastair's description of "fun venue.... to raise the spirits" before I really looked hard at the photo. The fellow third from the left grabs me. He certainly is missing the fun, and needs his spirits raised.
I have been recently reading about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This photo is toned just as most of the ones from the book I've read.

As Jim notes, this remains a very strong image, even if it is a different interpretation than your own. Best Wishes, Traveller

T - great comment. Perhaps this is what was bothering me about this shot. I was almost depressed when I looked at it. It probably means it is a fine shot, as it grabbed me emotionally.

This is the favorite of the three for me....but I do like the low angel of view used in Philosopher II. Here however, what I see is a Dorthea Lang kind of depression, homeless camp, but current, October 2024 kind of setting.
