09 Icy Flower

Quail Creek, AZ

Flowers were placed outside last night in a plate of water. The temps dropped to 22 deg this morning. I then misted the frosty flowers, waited for the droplets to freeze, then took some photos. The off white background in the lower left is ice.
These came from a planter that my wife has, and we have kept them going by covering them at night.
A few flowers were sacrificed for this photo.

The results from the high ISO 90D shots have gotten better since Adobe introduced their DeNoise app in Lightroom. Per their tech articles, they "leave a little ", mostly for visible texture I presume. But there are some things, like this flower, where a little more denoising is pleasing to me, so I use a little Topaz to, as I say, polish it up.

I want to go back and try some of the same processing on 60D and 80D sensors I used at v high ISO (assuming I kept them).

Very impressive results. The sensor in the 90D really is fabulous. I have the same sensor in my M6II, and pretty much the same one in my R7. It's amazing what results you can get from it at really high ISO, using the right software.

High shutter speed was for increased stability. I shot handheld in fixed aperture mode, light was dim before sunrise, and auto ISO. I didn't want a flash. Since I was close to the very small flower my hands were not as steady as I would have liked, so I accepted the speed. I knew I could handle the high ISO.

Why such a high shutter speed, Jim? Was it windy?

Alastair - The ISO is correct. I shot it in raw, then ran it through the new Lightroom DeNoise AI. I later followed that with a final "polish" of running it through Topaz Photo AI for denoising and sharpening.

It was a worthy sacrifice for a really good shot. Just curious, is the EXIF correct? It says 1/800 at F8 at ISO 25,600, but the image doesn't look like it was taken at such a high ISO.

My neighbor has a weather station he posts on Weather Underground. Per that station, the dewpoint bottomed out about 19.4 deg when the air temp was 22.

Mighty fine and creative thinking entry.
I’d be interested in knowing what the dew point was when it dipped to its overnight low. Had to be a minimum of 22 since the air temperature can’t drop below the dew point but since I don’t see frost anywhere I suspect it was lower yet. The night ran out of time before the atmosphere tanked and hit the wall. Paul
