02 We Voted

Jo Co Election Office 66061

Thankful that we all have the freedom and opportunity to voice our choices in a free and fair election.
None of that bogus “stop the steal” BS.

Definitely something to be thankful for. Here in Boulder, we just instituted ranked choice voting for mayor and city council, which is a much better system than the first past the post system that the US and UK use for most national elections. I shouldn't complain, though. I finally applied for US citizenship, after 35 years of having a Green Card. My interview, where I will have to remember who the current Speaker of the House is (it changes frequently), is set for December 8th, so I hope to be voting too in next year's elections. I remember learning about the Australian law many years ago, and thinking what a great idea it was. Despite the penalty being a very small fine, the turnout is still in the high 90's. I would be happy if we simply didn't put as many obstacles in the way of people voting. I've never understood why election day isn't a national holiday. Well, actually, I have understood that. It would increase voter participation, and many politicians would much prefer lower turnout.

I didn't know that either. I preach - if you don't vote, you can't complain.
I wish that could be enforced here.

Just when I think that Traveller has peaked with his unique “WHO KNEW” tidbits of information now we learn it’s compulsory for AU residents to vote. So I’m thinking he’s full of it and start googling, SOB I’ll be dammed, WHO KNEW! Further research I learned if you don’t vote you'll be fined a whopping $20 bucks payable by credit card on line. Wonder how far Crocodile Dundee had to travel to a polling place. Paul

Pats on the back...I didn't believe it true when I heard of this earlier this year, but Australia has mandatory voting for everyone...people in hospitals, people in prisons, everyone...I've floated the idea at various political blogs for doing this in the US but I've been fairly brutally shot down...so it is good to see people like you doing their civic duty voluntarily...so Kudos.
