Alastair - I am generally up there every week at this time of the year. I don't expect a lot of color change because of the long drought we had coupled with high heat. All the trees were quite stressed. A number of young trees died this summer, most of the large ones came back with the monsoon rains.
But you never know -- which is good reason to return.

You've got some nice colors there. It would be interesting to return in a couple of weeks to see how much the colors have changed.

T - yes, I am quite fortunate to have Madera Canyon only 11 miles from my house. It is one of the Sky Islands in the Sonoran Desert. From the lowest part of the canyon (4400 ft) to the top of Mount Wrightson (9460 ft) there are 5 climatic zones, coupled with riparian zones along the creeks. This leads to a wide variety of plants and animals as you hike through it.

Paul - you are probably right. There is a section of the canyon, maybe a 1/2 mile or so, that I like to hike and photograph along the stream. When the water is flowing, as it still is right now, it is pretty and peaceful. This has been dry for almost 18 months, so I want to take advantage of it.
