I use garden shears to harvest. Can also just break spears by hand.
Apparently the seeds are poisonous. I've never seen birds eat them.

As a kid I recall my mother sending me to the garden with a knife to harvest the asparagus. If you missed a few too many days and didn’t get it soon enough it turned into a bush and was no longer edible. (I didn’t much care for it anyway) I do remember letting it grow at the end of the season but didn’t know about the seeding, which makes perfect sense now that you mention it. Paul

I've posted a shot (from two years ago, and from a different angle) in Pending.

Kinda like a large ornamental grass. Are you familiar with asparagus ferns? Well, this is what they're named after. If you eat the stuff, you should know what it looks like.

T - like me. I have seen asparagus patches before, even had a small one once. But I don't remember seeing anything quite like this.

Very Interesting! I'd like to see a wider shot of what we are seeing...this is so wild, like something I've never seen before. Traveller

It was delicious in the spring, Jim. I leave some spears to grow so that next year we will have even more. It also self-seeds, and I have started a second patch.

Never too busy to harvest asparagus, Paul. It's so easy that there can be no excuses.

Afterspargarus is an excellent description for this section of your garden. I take it you were a little busy and couldn’t harvest on time. Paul

Nothing looks edible to me.

What a hairy mess! Was your goal to frame it with the other plants?
