Dave - in this case, my eye goes immediately to the butterfly and stays there.

Addendum: I'm surprised no one called me out for the milkweed flowers being overexposed.

Same lens (I only carried one to the zoo). I clicked wrong when I originally uploaded this shot.

The 70-300L has a pretty long MFD. I'd guess I shot this from four or five feet and the bear from about 200 (I'm notoriously poor at estimating distances and weights) over a mostly rocky surface and some water. I took another picture of the bear from a closer vantage point, though I don't think I got his good side. I'll post it in Pending.

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't have any special access. We're zoo members so get invited to some events but very rarely go anywhere other zoo-goers can't. My son and I had a nice time chatting with a zookeeper at the wolf exhibit, under the watchful eye of one of their charges.

Like, Guest, I was surprised at the definition and sharpness from the body if this Butterfly....and still sense that these were shot with different lenses. Also, I sense that Dave has some kind of access and can shoot the bear again if he wishes...(if you have a fascinating subject you can happily shoot it forever). Traveller

From how far away and over what surface did you shoot the polar bear? I'm wondering whether what Traveller is seeing is actually heat haze. As for the butterfly, isn't the visible wing's blurriness simply the result of DOF? The abdomen and hair on its back (which I didn't know butterflies had) look nice and crisp. Is that a milkweed plant?

T - I am not sure I saw the softness in the bear that you refer to. On the other hand Topaz Sharpen AI has become the go to program for a lot of people who want to sharpen things up. It would be worth a try on the bear.
On this image, it would sharpen up the visible wing.

This is very good, but more importantly, it allows me to circle back to you bear image...everything looks fine on it, the settings, speed, fstops, but, it still looks a little soft...unlike this image.

Were different lenses used? Did you maybe punch the shutter button because you saw this bear in this moment as a very good shot...I've done this, punching too hard...I was just curious why you think the bear is a little soft?

Best Wishes, Traveller

There used to be a monarch flyway a few miles just to our west but something changed since we don’t see nearly as many as we used to. Can’t remember the last time I saw them overnight in a nearby yard either. Paul

One wing up and one wing down?
