Dave, once the snow was cleared away, it wasn't too bad. This was a gas grill, and generally started right up using an extended lighter. It was only a few feet from the door to the deck.
The problem with cooking in mid winter, which I did, was loss of heat. That kept me only cooking food that needed 20 min or less, like chops, fish, burgers, etc.
I had a charcoal grill as well, but winter overwhelmed it.
