Common Carp

I caught this beauty today, about 8lb. Is he/she shaken, rattled or just rolling with it? I think just happy it knows it is going back in the water soon, it did, and what a wonderful condition it is in.
It's from a private lake with only about 50 members.

Hey Traveller I don’t know of many people that actually enjoy eating carp. If you ate carp it was more of a act of desperation rather than desire. I propose maybe you’re confusing carp and trout. Paul

Mick, You would love fishing in the US. I came from Minnesota, land of 10,000 lakes. Fishing was generally controlled, however, so that the fish population remained healthy. There was a fishing season, you needed a license, and there was a limit on the size and number of the kind of fish you could catch and keep. The rest you could release back into the lake; so called catch and release. Most, if not all states, have similar regulations. Jim

Traveller. The way it works here... These fish are not wild, they are farmed and then purchased by land owners to stock their lakes and stretches of river/canal. They are property, which is the reason for catch and release. It would be theft to take them. We pay annual/season or day tickets to fish them for sport all across the UK. I assume, from your incredible need to eat it, fishing is regarded as hunting. I think you can take small fish from wild stretches from the river, but don't quote me on that. Although, I doubt there are many wild stretches left. Mick

I guess I don't get catch and release...it has been a while since I've fished, ocean or river, but....if I caught it, I ate it, (or if it were a 25lb tuna, cut it into sections for freezing). No, if I catch you, you'll be cleaned and eaten. Best Wishes, Traveller

Dave. No, I don't mind, I'm not offended. I probably worded it wrong. I like to be a thinking angler and outwit the tough to get and have a semi lazy/unhectic day. But some days I feel the want for action and I'll go to a lake that is better stocked. Mick

Having lived and fished (a little) in both Michigan and Minnesota, I have always regarded fishing as a gamble. I generally went for the fun of peacefully drifting on the water and being with whoever was in the boat with me; though I was often alone.. Jim

Dave. Yes, it can take them until after they have spawned (usually in May) to start feeding from a hook bait. A lot of people hate fishing for the carp there because the risk of a blank (catching nothing) is huge. There is a good stock of other fish that can be caught so you just have to bait and tackle up for those if you want more action. Alternatively, as I mentioned to Jim, I have other lakes I'm a member of that are more willing to get hooked. :-) Mick

When you say "they haven't switched on in this lake yet", Mick, does that mean they're still in their torpid winter mode? We have a small pond with goldfish (carp relatives), and they are slowly becoming more active. I started feeding them their spring/fall food about two weeks earlier than usual this year, just a little at first. No fishing. I've never even caught any using a net. Dave

Here in UK it is dominantly catch and release, all rivers and most (99% I reckon) private lakes. It's only certain private lakes that specifically stock trout that you are allowed to take any away, and you are limited to only a couple as per their individual rules. I think it holds a lot of weight, what you say, about the remaining ones being smart enough to avoid hook bait. This is close to what I believe about the lake I caught this fish. It doesn't get restocked, all the carp have been resident since it was dug out ~15 yrs ago. I believe the fish have enough natural resources too because it is well established and isn't overly stocked. Another place I fish is quite different, it gets regular restocking and there are plenty in there that they have to compete for food. They are suckers for hook bait. Mick

Mick - I remember many years ago fishing in a small controlled lake like yours in Illinois that was monitored by the Department of Natural Resources. I think it was mostly catch and release, and you could keep one fish between certain limits. It was very difficult to catch a fish when I was there. But the DNR monitored the fish population, and said that the population remained stable over time. They concluded that the fish had "evolved" over the years where the ones remaining were "smart enough" not to bite on a hook. Their only solution to return it to a good lake to fish was to remove the current population and restock it with new fish. I don't recall what actually happened. Jim

Dave. I don't know about the carp, but I was thinking a moment before I caught this fish that "fishing sucks". lol They haven't switched on in this lake yet, not many are being caught, that was the only one I caught that day. Mick
