Thanks. I prefer to get shots without cutting or killing my target. In the past, I have tried to put backgrounds behind a plant outside, but it wasn't possible with this bush style rose.

Not cheating at all, this is very similar to what I would do all the time with my studio style photography. Different setup but similar style. I did electrical work in a couple commercial photography studios over the years during shot setups and I was fascinated with what I saw and mentally noted how things were done.
On one of them they were setting up a shot to photograph a food plate for a high end restaurant. I mentioned that the product looked fantastic and he told me that the products they shoot are not edible because they use various additives to make it show its best in the photo. That always stuck with me. Paul
I cheated (to some degree). I cut the rose from the bush, and then put it into a small light box I have borrowed. I held the rose by the stem in a clip so it was in the air. The background is just the white fabric of the box. The rose was lit by a bounced flash. I did not light the box, and just set the white balance so it was a light grey, not white.
