06 18 Years: G2 to 90D

Green Valley, AZ

This is a rather simple comparison of two cameras & lenses which are about 18 years apart in age and technology.
I attempted to shoot the same subjects with the same perspective, It is difficult, as the aspect ratios are different, as is the area of what is seen through the view finder. Of the course the cameras shot each other.

Each shot was post processed only in Lightroom and kept simple - WB, tones, capture sharpening and a bit of NR. Each photo was resized to 5000 pixels wide. I cropped a bit to make the vertical heights the same. No post work was done on the resized photos. Of course you will see differences when you look at higher magnifications.

One conclusion - for simple posting on the Web like this the old G2 holds up pretty well.

I still shoot a few with my G6. That camera was a good companion for several years.

T - LOL. Probably still am. Anyway, I got the idea from both Dave's snowy time shots, and your question/comment on the G2 in exhibition. You can see some small color differences in the cactus needles and even the cactus body, so I am sure that if you looked real closely at the color chart that you would pick up the differences as well.

Each shot was white balanced against the 3rd grey square in the color chart. As I recall, my G2 always gave shots with brighter and more saturated reds. The greens were probably more subdued, but I don't really remember that.

Dave - Increasing the image size is a straightforward process in Photoshop. In fact, they give you seven ways to do so, as each has its strengths. All of them are what you might call extrapolation. For the G2 photo in exhibition, I also went back and sharpened the image some with other software. Increasing a 4MP image to an 32MP image is really pushing it. You cannot gain detail, but at small scale you can make it look quite acceptable.

I wasn't aware the number of pixels could be increased. Some extrapolation required?

Re G2 - no. Its base raw is 2272 x 1704 for 4MP. I upsized the G2 shots in PS so they could be shown next to the 90D shots. For the shot in Exhibition, I did more sharpening on the upsized G2 shot - but not here.

Is the G2 capable of 5000 pixels?
