Smoke On The Water

Lake Of The Ozarks

This formula style racing boat had just cleared the no wake zone from the cove and put the "petal to the metal" so to speak when he realized smoke was coming from the engine compartment. He shut down the engine, opened the hatch and flames erupted engulfing the boat. He jumped overboard, swam away and was picked up by another boater who transported him to the nearby water patrol boat who was on the scene quickly.

Apparently the SOP for boat fires on the lake of the Ozarks is to let her burn and sink to the bottom which is exactly what happened.

Imagine the conversation with the wife when he took a Uber back to the condo. "Hey hun I had a little problem with the boat". "What.... where is the boat", "um about 100 feet down at mile marker 20".

Only retouching I did was a little cropping, burn the lower smoke a touch to enhance the effect and use the sponge tool to selectively push some colors a bit since it was a dreary grey day. It was raining a couple hours earlier!

As far as the cell camera goes the later model iPhones indeed have impressive cameras.
I do find your comment interesting because for the last few years I saw most of what I shot, edit, resize and enter as embarrassingly soft and very lacking of detail. And being forthright that was a driving force for me giving up the DSLR’s and lenses figuring I lost the true ability to edit a photo to a acceptable level. My thoughts were why go to all the effort to edit and resize when it turns into a blurry mess at posting size.

This is impressive, especially impressive with an iPhone...did you do much photoshoping? I ask because such clarity doesn't seem possible from a cellphone. Traveller

Apparently more often than one might think. I was chatting with a local when we were watching the fire and he told me that a fiberglass boat fully loaded with fuel becomes rather hazardous as it burns so the water patrol will instruct the nearby boaters to form a circle around the boat and they begin to drive in a small circle to create a vortex and sink the ship before it gets out of control. That didn’t happen here because the water patrol officer stayed a safe distance away and can be seen in the upper right of the photo holding his position observing the situation.

Yikes. I wonder how often that happens to these big boats?
