Monkey Island

Madagascar

OK, so they're lemurs and not monkeys.
I like both the picture and the song.
Hope you will, too.

My goal was not to start an argument. I tend to be less technical about these things.

I was shooting from a canoe with changeable light conditions and animals both moving and (fairly) still. I picked 1/500 TV to accommodate the mix as best as possible. I'll post some ringtail images in the thread to give an idea of the variety.

I tend to use a lot of auto ISO, as I tend to set F/stop and speed first. That is one of the advantages of the 90D (and 80D) in that the noise is quite low even for higher ISOs and is easily treated.

If I want the absolute best, I'll use a tripod so I can also fix the ISO at 100 - assuming the subject is not moving.

ISO of 100 does not clip highlights more than any other ISO - that is a function of total exposure and light. EG, If I expose (single point) on the lemur's very dark eyes or nose here, the white fur on the left will probably be clipped no matter the ISO. If I use a multipoint average exposure on the entire face, I will not clip the whites, but might lose a little bit of detail in the blacks - though the sun is really bright on the right lemur's chest.
These guys in this light is also why I shoot a lot of HDRs

Well, that was nightmarish! I am glad I said what I did in that I may be wrong...studying the question however, what a rabbit hole....though I will take your word for it...especially seeing and trying to think deeply about that chart shown.

What about the argument that iso100 has less noise but clips highlights?

I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to discuss this...really at all.

So thank you, I usually need a higher iso to get the lens I use to their sweet spot with a higher f Stop, but I will start using iso 100 when I can get away with it,

So thank you, again.

Auto ISO.

Traveller - re base iso. I disagree, as for both the 80D and the 90D the base ISO is 100, with better performance than at ISO 200. I continue to shoot when I can at ISO 100, as the noise levels are lower and the dynamic range is higher. See, for example, https://www.canonrumors.com/initial-testing-shows-canons-new-32-5mp-aps-c-sensor-improves-dynamic-range-over-predecessor/

My own tests verify the lower noise at ISO 100.

I'd be interested in reading about iso 200 as being defined as "the base".

I prefer the panorama cropping on this....like the sailboat image, all settings are good, but...and other people should correct me if I am wrong, but your lowest default iso setting should be 200....200 is the base case in Canon's, and 100 is just subtractive from the base to get there. 100 is useful in very bright circumstances, but unlike film, I don't think it is your base case with digital. (this is only a psa for future reference)

I thought of creating a collage but settled on this (someone with more skills than I could have assembled it from separate shots). If there's interest, I can post more Lemur Island (yes, that's what it was called) images in Pending.

I like the group. Nice capture.
