Dave - I, and my wife, grew up in Troy, NY.
She has relatives who now live in Utica. We were there last year for a "family" reunion.

A few years before my time, Jim, and I believe just before Colgate went co-ed.

Please remind me where your family lived. Utica comes to mind, but with little confidence.

My brother Tom graduated in 1970, I think.

I was aware of the university but have no connections to it. I simply took the bits of information and with a little logic and few minutes of research I was 99.9% sure I had the location figured out. Im quite sure that part of New York is beautiful this time of the year with the season changes.

Colgate is in Hamilton, and Hamilton is in
Clinton.

Yes, Taylor Lake. What year did your brother graduate from Hamilton.

I grew up in upstate NY, and know well of Colgate. My brother went to Hamilton just down the road.
When I look at Google Earth, I see Taylor Lake, which I assume is this lake.

Good guess, Paul. Kind of an obscure place. Are you familiar with it or a good information seeker? I would have given equal credit for Madison University.

I’m guessing this is the Colgate university in the small community of Hamilton NY with this being Taylor lake. Colgate is a small private university where they have as many students as the population of the city.

Yes, name of school, and...sigh...it has been difficult choosing between competing very fine images...a good problem to have. Traveller

What is the name of the school?

It was a toss-up between the two shots. This one looks across the lake toward fraternity row while the one in Pending features the chapel, library, academic buildings, and dormitories.

Several decades after the university's founding, a mathematics professor became intrigued with notions of campus beautification and petitioned the Board of Trustees to hire a professional landscape architect. The lake (marsh-like fields had dominated the lower part of the campus, making it unsuitable for farming) was the professor's personal project and one of the last pieces of the puzzle. He spent the summer of 1903 committed to working it and the dam at its west end. It has been a campus hub since then, ice skating in the winter, graduations and alumni events along its shores, a haven for wildlife, and the involuntary destination of many student celebrating a birthday. I was fortunate to have an outstanding view of it from my room senior year and have placed a nighttime shot of it in pending.

Hope that satisfies your curiosity.

Both are good shots, giving a different emphasis on the subject.
Personally, I prefer this one with the emphasis on the lake.
The one in pending leads my eye to the buildings.

As to the story - I'd like to hear that as well.

There has to be a story about this lake, why and how it was built and how long it took to complete. I think I like the one in pending best.
