Looking through a lot of shots, I see where most of my close up macros with this lens are at f/16 - f/20. I also tend to shoot at 1/200 sec or a bit more. I find it tough to hand hold at focal distances of around 12 in at anything less, even with the IS on. The resultant ISOs seem to vary from 400 to 1000, sometimes more, depending on whether the subject is in direct sun or not. Most of the time when I am on a trail, they are not in super bright sun. The 80D has pretty good noise profiles through 1200-1600 or so where I can easily software reduce the noise.
On the trail, if there are shadows, I use the flash.

f/16 would for this shot would have required much higher than ISO 100 (it was less in full sun than highlighted by the sun). I'll keep my eyes out for a repeat opportunity. Or find a spider with all its limbs in the same plane.

That "rule" must breakdown with a macro lens focussing at 11-12 inches with the 100mm macro lens.

I'll go through mine in more detail to get some better statistics. But I get the same feeling from folks on the macro forum.

The sunny 16 rule says you should be able to shoot at F16 ISO 100 1/100 and have a correct exposure. Paul

I have come to the conclusion on my macros that handheld shots generally require flash. And that is even on the very bright days in AZ. I want to have a aperture smaller than f/16 and an ISO of 1600 or less. That generally requires a flash. I have an older flash unit that doesn't fully allow me to control the brightness, so I am often bouncing off a white card to get something akin to fill flash.

This is very, very nice...I love the translucent legs....but I wish you had a little more in f stops for a little more DOF...I'm experimenting at this moment with my 60mm macro...experimenting unsuccessfully I should add. And so to bed.

I never knew they were so colorful. I spotted this one a day earlier, when its web caught the sun. Other priorities prevailed (can you believe it?) so I was happy to find the spider - minus the beautiful web - the following day. I'm guessing it was in the process of reconstructing.

Looks like a common garden spider, also in the orb weaver family. Love finding and photographing spiders and their webs. Paul
