Do you think spot metering would also work well for tennis, DaveV? And would it complement or oppose nine-point focus?

There was less than a second between me shooting tennis and shooting the hawk. Given my so-so tracking ability, I was surprised at how well I was able to follow it.

Try changing your metering mode to center or spot. It may not be perfect, but it should help.

I was shooting tennis, saw the hawk, and swung my camera skyward. No time to change settings (though I could have increased zoom).

I know what you mean about the back lighting. I shoot in raw, so I can rescue quite a few, but I can't always get the detail in most of them. This is where you need to expose for the bird, not the whole scene - and easier said then done. That's why I appreciate Dave v's photos so much.

I posted a quick and dirty rendering over in Pending...couldn't sleep, so, 2 minutes, dodge tool at like, 800 size and then 250 for the body, a tiny bit of curves in ps...smart sharpening. Traveller

I agree it’s dark but I know I can’t do better. Whenever I try to shoot birds (200 mm lens.... yea right!!) either the bird is properly exposed or the sky is, never both. Paul

Backlit bird shot very much in haste. I'll see what I can do.

A good capture, but dark on my screen so I can't see what he is carrying.
