Balanced Rocks at Lake Superior

North Shore of MN

I was inspired by some friends who took a class in stacking and balancing rocks.

Well let me first say those are some fantastic looking rocks to come out of Superior. I had no idea. I find it interesting it was half a degree off. I held up a protractor to the iPad screen and it was almost 3 degrees. Probably a degree of protractor user error. Paul

Paul - thanks. The rocks were those I found on the beach. I didn't take the class; I only heard about it from my friends. I later searched on the net and began to understand what the experts really do.
This was my one and only try at "balancing rocks".
Re tilt - per Lightroom, it is less than 1/2 a degree. It is a bit of an illusion with the close foreground on the right and the more distant rock formation on the far left. This is now corrected by <1/2 degree.

Oh, btw your running downhill about 3 degrees right to left. Paul

Jim your last sentence got me to chuckling, thanks for that. Are those indigenous rocks that can be picked up anywhere along the shore or were they provided by the class instructor. Paul

I understand your thinking. I was sort of in the same place until I heard more about the class. I guess there is a fair amount of screening of the rocks to find the right shapes and areas on the rock that make for good balancing. Then there is the art component. I'll have to admit that I may have stacked my last rocks for a while.

Never thought it was easy. I am thinking that apart from the nice to view end result, there might be value in the mental exercise of performing the task. Just caught me in an odd way to think of taking a class on the subject

Mike - thanks. These were rocks I stacked on my first attempt at the "art". Not as easy as it might first seem.
Take a look at https://www.google.com/search?q=stacking+balanced+rocks&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=940&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiqyuH0-J3PAhWGbT4KHeV9B_wQsAQILw
for some those that have mastered the art.

I like the image. I question that value of a class on stacking rocks. I do not question the results, though.
