An Evening Stroll Under The Milkyway

It's been a while since I've wanted to pick up a camera and tripod. But I decided to go for an evening walk tonight. Found a great spot where I was able to catch the MilkyWay with the naked eye. I've been wanting to get a shot of the MilkyWay but earlier attempts were in areas where there was too much random light. This spot was near perfect. I figured I'd let the camera try and capture the scene I was seeing. After some PP this is what I came up with.

Thanks! I've been kind of in a lull as far as photography is concerned. I've started a new job and trying to get in full time is taking every last bit of energy from me. Weekends are my resting periods.

Re light sources - true. I am back in Green Valley AZ, where I am lucky that AZ has a lot of laws governing lights in order to minimize light pollution. Astronomy is big business here, and we have really clear skies. My house is also at 3000 ft, so that helps as well.
I'm also learning how to deal better with sensor noise. I've snapped a few shots with the lens cover on. And I have cleaned my monitor's screen better than ever, LOL.

Get as far away as you can from any man made light source. It helps a lot.

I was inspired, but nothing I captured comes close to this.
I may try again later tonight.

This has inspired me to go outside tonight and see what I can see and shoot.
This is really nice.

That is a beautiful shot! The silhouettes of the trees framing the galaxy are part of what makes this a gorgeous photo, for me. Brings it "down to earth" in a way. Dave

Thanks! I too have had difficulty capturing this wonderful phenomenon. My problem is that even though I live in a small county there are still WAY too many lights in the area. This location was the darkest and lowest point I could find away from all the man made light in the area. My first few shots had light spillage in them. Even this one had some light spill but I was able to correct that a lot in this one without losing the detail of the milkyway gas clouds. It has to be VERY dark where you're sitting and I would say get about 10 miles at least from any big town. Also go lower if you can. I believe the hill I went down to get to this location was at least 200 feet lower than the city level. Also, LOTS of trees surrounding the area helps as well.

This has me moderately enraged....I've done some good stary night shots, but I have never been able to do the Milky Way....even at 12,000 ft...damn this is nice. Good work. Best Wishes, Traveller

Edit: In my defense, I don't think that I have even seen the Milky Way the way so many others seem to have. I do so love this shot of yours....
