Paul. This was shot in the early afternoon on my first walk after we arrive. Not a lot of DR to work with, unless I played more with the shadows. Lightroom now allows you to pull a lot out of the shadows and highlights. However, when I have visited the Grand Canyon, I generally shot a lot for HDR processing, using -2, 0, +2 for exposures.
I do the same with sunsets and late afternoon shots; or anything with deep shadows included with areas of bright light. Of course, you have to shoot Raw.

Trav - Thanks. The woodpeckers love these cactus.

No doubt the evening light would be as spectacular as the morning. Since I've never had boots on the ground (yet) in AZ mid day it's hard for me to understand how a DSLR has enough DR to capture the scene correctly. Paul.

Paul - one of the things I like about AZ in the winter time is the quality of the light. I have not spent a lot of time near dawn taking photos, but I have some fine evening shots in the waning light; truly golden. Even the mid morning and later afternoon light is quite good.

I flew into Phoenix 2 days ago on my way to LA. We were on a early AM flight that got us into Phoenix just as the sunrise was occurring. Wow wow wow, what fantastic and beautiful sight. I can only imagine your scene at that same time in the morning. Paul.
