Thanks, Traveller, for chiming in: your comment proves how subjective our perception is. After «restudying» the effect this image has *on me*, I think the problem is threefold: 1) on the lower left-hand side, there is a disturbing—to my eye—wooden structure that could easily be cropped out if one accepts to lose in the process one of the three «golden triptych ikons»—not a great loss, I think— 2) The tomb appears in front of huge windows and is, therefore, backlit; that's why we can't see much detail of the, as Ken calls it, "center of interest" (which it definitely is for me, though not for Traveller). Maybe shooting in the evening instead of the morning, might help, maybe not (that depends on whether there are windows on the opposite side as well); otherwise, how about some fill-flash, strategically placed? Don't ask me: I never learned how to use a flash effectively! 3) A moderately limited DOF might have «bathed» the tomb in sharpness while blurred the blackground a bit, but playing with DOF limitation when using such a wide angle is only for the very brave and bold (it wouldn't be for me, anyway). — You see, Traveller: on the contrary of you, I don't like my eye to wander *relentlessly*; my eye needs to *rest from time to time*: that's why it looks out for *anchorages* which it doesn't find here. This is my very personal *view*; I welcome different ones and would love to hear from others: such a discussion is, IMO, an interesting part of our challenges; we just have lost the habit... ~ db.

I'm not sure the tomb is the central idea of this image, though one might think so. I thank Daniel for bringing this to the fore...what makes this picture effective for me is....the ambiance, the subject isn't the Tomb, nor the prominent floor, or the stone walls...it is all of it...at once!

The eye does wander...good.

Thanks, Traveller. No, there was nothing under the lens, but I was still holding the camera, even though the bottom of the camera was resting on the floor, so I could tilt it slightly upward. This image has also been cropped a little from the bottom because, with the camera on the floor, a bit more of the floor showed in the image that I wanted. - Ken

At first glance, this is a *very* nice and attractive image. But, then, I wonder: what do you, the photographer, want me to look at? «The Tomb»—as your title indicates and the composition confirms—should most probably be the main subject; right? But the tomb is not where my eyes want to go: neither the light, nor the sharpness (focus), nor anything else take them there! My eyes wander restlessly all over the frame without finding a point to anchor... Is that just me?? ~ db.

Humph...I am surprised how effective this is....very nice, did you have a writing pin or something to hold the lens a little off the floor....you should sell this to Winchester Cathedral. Best Wishes, Traveller
