I was just over in pending and wondered why 'Punch a hole in the sky' hadn't been entered in exhibition, and now I see. This is a marvellous capture (as is the one in pending).

I was lucky enough to see a launch, but not from such a fine vantage point. It is a striking and memorable occasion.

From a different generation, when I see a rocket launch, a song always plays in my head. It's called Saturn 5, by The Inspiral Carpets (a British indie band).

SATURN 5, YOU REALLY WERE THE GREATEST SIGHT
STRETCHING OUT ON A SUMMER'S DAY
HOUSTON, IT'S CALLING ME BACK TO HER

AN EAGLE LANDS, AND A PLANET FULL OF PEOPLE RAISE IT'S HANDS
ALL HAIL THE MEN WHO WILL WALK UP IN HEAVEN TODAY

Sorry for the CAPS, copied from a Lyric site and I didn't want to retype!

Thanks, Techo. I added another shot in Pending showing more smoke as the Shuttle gets higher http://www.pbase.com/cichallenge/image/145581815) - ken

Impressive! Great shot and memory keepsake.
Never noticed how dense the smoke appears. Almost like cotton.

It is not hard to imagine how lucky you must feel to have the chance to witness this spectacle. Landscape format and the centered composition work perfectly here. -Gerald

Paul, I work for one of the other NASA centers and was on-loan to KSC to assist at the press site. - ken

Did you have press credentials to get you in there or did you know someone and get some strings pulled. Paul
kchristian 19-Aug-2012 15:12
Hi, Paul. This was taken from the Kennedy Space Center press site, roughly three miles from the launch pad. Sorry you didn't get to see a launch. Videos and stills could never do justice to the experience of "being there," hearing the popping and crackling of the engines and feeling the thundering deep down in your chest. Hopefully the next generation of manned craft will be launching from here before long. -- ken

I always wanted to see a shuttle liftoff but never got the chance. Your location you shot from seems a little closer than the usual public viewing area. Paul

Thanks, Traveller! Thanks, Michael!

Plenty of motion here Ken. As Traveller said, the smoke across the lower part of the frame is a major plus and the central composition works very well. Regards, Michael

Excellent! I love the white smoke covering the entire lower frame. Traveller
