Thanks for the comments. The guy with the stare was fine and the more I see it, the more I think his expression is just that of awareness.
I did get a bit of grief from the partially obscured guy (facing camera) as I walked past them, as he suggested (only half joking) that I owed the five some money for taking their picture. I just smiled, said "Je ne comprends pas", and kept walking!
