sorry k, but imo these beautiful birds need room to fly and troy has provided that in this orginal pic. shu

I also wanted to participate in cropping Troy's wonderful picture
My version (with some subtle adjustments) can be found here:http://upload.pbase.com/cichallenge/image/129250638

Thanks for the comments and discussion. I did think about a tighter crop and the thanks to Trav for the one in pending. I did want to show the wider view to get in more of the surrounding colors and such. I like the varying points of view and always want to learn from them.

I think that both Mary Anne and Traveller have good points. The crop that Trav put in Pending highlights the birds and their colors beautifully. But his point about showing the environment that the birds are in is a valid one, maybe not for this challenge specifically but in general. I used to think that Traveller's photos included way too much detail and the Crop Queen that I am I tried to get him to crop his images for a tighter look. But having seen his images over time I have come to appreciate his style, he has a definite point of view, a definite philosophy, even if he hasn't formulated it to himself in so many words yet. ~Sharon

I like the picture - nice and sharp. I tried a few time to photograph the birds in flight and I know how complicated it is. Well done!

No, Mary Anne, you miss the point I think...you are correct...in a photographic sense, and this is a photographic challenge.

I think that you are even artistically right....but philosophically right....there I'm not so sure.

This is what makes this such an interesting question.

Best Wishes, Traveller

Trav, actually I wasn't saying that this particular photo would be better with a tighter crop, only suggesting that bringing more of the coloration in the cranes would make it align more closely with the topic of this challenge, which I think is asking us to include more of the complete spectrum. This version does show better detail in the birds, but I agree with you that the sense of their environment is now lost. Certainly, the limited palette of warm earth tones is lovely, as is the golden light. But then, it could be that I've misunderstood the topic.

This is always an extremely difficult issue, Mary Anne, to crop the image tighter and thereby make a BETTER photograph...but thereby lose the context of the thing within the photograph.

I agree with you that a tight crop would make for a better picture for this challenge especially, but, we wouldn't know where these birds lived, what their environment was like at the moment of flight...

This is, I think, a deeply personal and philosophical debate within the photographer...I know it is for me.

Very Best Wishes, Traveller

Very nice shot, Troy. If you were to enlarge and crop the image, would we see more color on the head and tips of the wings?

Thank you, Traveller. I guess I'm extremely fortunate.

Excellent, Troy. I have been meaning to tell you that I saw and shot (photographically) an American Eagle on the Potomac....it is a terrible far away image, one shot only, I tried to catch up with the damned thing....Need I tell you that he/she flew faster than I can run?

LOL

I don't know how you do what you do....but you do it well.

Best Wishes, Traveller
