9th Place "MaryEllen" by Kelly Bellis

Tremont, Maine

Photographer MaryEllen Martel of Southwest Harbor, Maine waves to the speeding throng of lead cyclists in the 2010 Westside byclcle race, an annual event sponsored by Harbor House, after having caught them seconds ealier with her trusty Canon 30D.

She is currently showing six of her photos in the show entitled "Don't Say Cheese" and if you are in the Mount Desert Island area between 11AM and 4PM weekdays, you're welcome to stop by and check them out (and others) at the Old Sound School (yellow, one room schoolhouse onState Route 198 between Somesville and Northeast Harbor, just north of Sargent Drive).

Westside Ride 2009In addition to her own personal photography, MaryEllen also does photography for WNSX radio, Kisma Wildlife Preserve and Harbor House. Click on the image to check out one of her great shots from last year's race.

The Rachel Carson quote as her email tagline is worth sharing:

If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.

The motion blur really makes this a very dynamic portrait. -Michael

Superb work in all respects. Sharp focus with precisely the right amount of blur in the background. Excellent work.

Thanks Mary Anne for commenting. I generally have the camera set for aperture priority - except for this day where I set the shutter speed fixed at 1/60 just to get that effect of the blur of color with MaryEllen the main subject.

Nice shot, K. I really like the sense of motion in the bikers speeding by behind her.
