North of Bakersfield Ca, these palms were planted by English settlers 150 years ago. They have been used by aviators going back to WWII Air Corpse training, and remain today a navigational landmark for pilots flying over central California. These images were taken in 2002, but I just learned their history in a lunch conversation with a gentleman who farms the land surrounding them.
