Chaplin Monument

Gettysburg, Pa.

Of the 1500 monuments and sculptured memorials at Gettysburg, only one is
in honor of a chaplain.
Rev. Father William Corby was known for his bravery under fire as he ministered to the 88th N.Y.
Infantry commonly referred to as the "Irish Brigade".

After the Civil War Rev. Corby became the second president of Notre Dame University whose athletic teams mascot name evolved into "The Fighting Irish" in his honor.
The Irish Brigade was made up of 3,000 troops at the start of the war, casualties had reduced their number to 530 by the start of the battle of Gettysburg.

Great shot, and a bit of history that this "Domer" wasn't aware of!
The memories of this war that almost cost us our country are so overwhelming. Its scope and scale are so far beyond what we are suffering today! -BJ
