Seat of Cibola County on the Rio San Jose on I-40. Named for the three Grant brothers from Ontario, Canada, railroad contractors.
Cibola is derived from an Indian word for "buffalo" by way of the Spanish and dates back to the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola.
The county was created in 1981 from western Valencia County.
