Canyon de Chelly National Monument is important for the many ruins and rock art found in the three major canyons. Located in northeastern Arizona in the middle of Navajo Nation near the border with New Mexico, the canyon complex includes many ruins more than 1,000 years old. Antelope Ruins, and Mummy Cave Ruins are in Canyon del Muerto, while White House Ruins and Sliding Rock Ruins are in Canyon de Chelly. Starting near the entrance to the canyon, Canyon de Chelly is only a few feet high, but many miles later to the east, the canyon rises to at least 1,000 feet near Spider Rock and beyond. Visitors can only view the ruins from North Rim or South Rim Drives. Canyon half or full day tours are available for gound view of the ruins and canyon features. There is camping and overnight accommdations nearby. From I-40 take US 191 from Chambers, AZ north through Ganado to Chinle, then procede east on Navajo 64 to the Visitor Center. From Cortez, CO (Mesa Verde NP), take US 160 east into Arizona to US 191 near Tes Nez lah and follow the highway past Round Rock and Many Farms to Chinle.
