Hexham Abbey

view map

The font in Hexham Abbey. The stone font, below the bottom of this image, is one of the oldest
parts of the abbey, made in medieval times, possibly from a Roman column. Above the stone font
is a Jacobean iron cover, and above that a wooden canopy carved from 15th century wood by a
Belgian refugee in 1916.

The font contains holy water used in baptisms. The word "font" derrives from the Latin "fons", which means spring, i.e. a source of water.
