Just outside Keswick is the Castlerigg Stone Circle, a megalithic monument built around 3200 BC (Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age).
It is one of the earliest stone circles in England, and possibly in the whole of Europe. Some stones in the circle have been aligned
with the midwinter sunrise and various lunar positions.
