Coniston Water

Sometimes known as Lake Coniston, although that name is more properly that of a famous racehorse!
Third largest by volume of the lakes in the Lake District. Most famous, perhaps, for being the site of
many attempts to break the world water speed record, including the fateful attempt in 1967 by
Donald Campbell, who achieved a top speed of 320 mph, but then lost control of the Bluebird, which
somersaulted, crashed and sank. The remains of the Bluebird and Campbell's body were recovered in
2001, and the Bluebird has subsequently been restored, though it has yet to be returned to Coniston.
