Looking through the medieval arch towards County Hall.
The arch dates from the 15th century and was originally part of the gateway into Abingdon Abbey
which was located to the rear of the photographer (me!). The central arch was for mounted travellers,
whilst the right hand arch was for those on foot. Originally, the left arch (as seen here in the photo)
was a small porter's lodge, which was used as a police station in the 19th century. The lodge was removed
in 1865 to provide a second pedestrian archway. After the Dissolution, the rooms above the arch were used
as a prison until the Old Gaol was built in 1812.
