Basilica of Saint Francis, rebuilt in the 10th-11th centuries over an earlier edifice dedicated to the Apostles and later to St Peter.
The funeral of Dante Alighieri was held here in 1321, and the poet is buried in a tomb on the side of the church. The local authorities
have resisted for centuries the demands by Florence for the return of the remains of its most famous exile. The current building was
heavily restored during the 1920s and 1930s.
