The Town Hall, flanking one side of the Piazza del Popolo, built originally in the 13th century by the Venetians as the seat
of their governors after conquering the city. The two columns with statues were originally erected in 1483, with the lion
of Saint Mark on one and Saint Apollinaris on the other. However, in 1509, when Pope Julius II defeated the Venetians and
conquered the city, the lion of St Mark was replaced by the statue of Apollinarius, while a statue of Saint Vitalis was
placed on the second column.
