Castelnau-de-Montmiral, founded as an Albigensian bastide in 1222 by Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse, under the name “Castellum Novum Montis Miribalis.
During subsequent years, the village has remained an impressive stronghold. During the Hundred Years’ War (1337 – 1453) it successfully withstood
the attempts by Edward the Black Prince to besiege the town. Later it served as a shelter for Catholics fleeing from the Wars of Religion.

The central square is surrounded by corbel vaults, and encloses a stone pillory.
