Basilica di San Vitale – one of the most important examples of early Christian Byzantine art and architecture in Europe.
The church was begun in 526 and completed in 547,and was sponsored by Julius Argentarius, who was also sponsored the construction
of the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe. The church is unusual in having an octagonal plan, seen here surrounding the dome,
and has the best preserved Byzantine mosaics to be found anywhere outside Constantinople
