Cannobio – dating back to Roman times. During medieval times, it was a centre for wool and tanning industries as well as lumber.
In 1522 a painting of the Virgin Mary allegedly began bleeding. Soon after this, a devastating plague swept through the area,
but left Cannobio relatively unscathed. Religious opinion linked these two events, and Cardinal Charles Borromeo ordered a chapel
to be built to house the painting.
