Winchelsea

Winchelsea, Church of St Thomas à Becket, erected by Edward I in 1288. Originally a huge Gothic church, much of it was either never built
or fell into ruin with only the chancel and side chapels remaining, and the remnants of the ruined trancepts. Spike Milligan is buried here
in the churchyard. Strict churchyard rules banned his dying words from the gravestone. Instead, “I told you I was ill” was carved in Gaelic.
