Spitfire PL965, built in 1944 at Aldermaston, originally as a photo reconnaissance aircraft, designed to operate at high altitude (over 30,000 ft)
as well as high speeds over 400 mph, and hence the fastest of all the Merlin powered Spitfires. After the war, the aircraft was retired and sold
to the Royal Netherlands Air Force for the princely sum of £25. It was returned to the UK for restoration to airworthyness in 1987, and flew again
in 1992, and is now part of the Hangar 11 Collection in Essex and flies at air displays across Europe.
