Pyramids of Güímar – six rectangular pyramid-shaped structures built from lava stone without the use of cement. The park was opened in 1998 by Thor Heyerdahl (of Kontiki fame).
Heyerdahl became intrigued by the Güímar pyramids and hypothesized a transatlantic link between Egypt and Central America, researching possible parallels between the Canarian
terrace structures and pyramid structures in Egypt and pre-Columbian Central America. He proposed that the Güímar pyramids formed a stopping point on voyages between ancient Egypt
and the Maya civilization. Other explanations attribute their construction to the Guanche, the aboriginal inhabitants of Tenerife before the Spanish conquest, since caves underneath
them have been found to contain Guanche artefacts. Archaeological excavations have now established that the pyramids date from the 19th century. Their purpose is still unknown,
though, and there appear to be a number of connections with astronomical phenomena (such as alignments with the sun during solstices)and also with Freemasonry.
