Rheinfels Fortress, founded by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen around 1245. It was used as the counts’ residence and was one of the
most important centres of courtly life in the region. In 1479, the castle passed to the Landgraves of Hessen, who expanded it into
the largest fortress on the Rhine. It was destroyed by the French Revolutionary Army in 1797. Much is still in ruins, though part
of the fortress has been restored, and now houses a hotel and a museum.
