Marksburg Castle. Dating originally from around 1117, but mainly built during the 14th century, this is the only castle along the Middle Rhine that was never destroyed.
The fortress was used for protection rather than as a royal residence. It was also a source of revenue for the town of Brauch, over which it towers, by collecting tolls
from passers-by on the river.
