One morning, we woke up to find the balcony strewn with the corpses of dead mayflies. Mayflies hatch from spring to autumn, not necessarily in May,
and in enormous numbers. The immature mayfly is aquatic, known as nymphs or naiads, and may live for several years in water. When ready to emerge
from the water, they hatch into subimagos, an immature winged stage which lasts for a day or so, then they moult to the full adult form, which has a
very short life span. The adults do not feed, their sole purpose being to mate and lay eggs.
