Herengracht and Herenstraat bridge – showing the typical architecture – houses with gables on the top, equipped with hoists to winch goods
and furniture, etc. up into the attics. These canal houses were often built with a deliberate tilt, allowing goods to be winched up without
crashing into the windows. A law dating from 1565 limited the amount of tilt to prevent the risk of buildings toppling over into the streets.
