In 1974 Turkey invaded the north of the island, culminating in the establishment of a United Nations buffer zone between the two sections, known as the Green Line,
and shown in red on the above map, separating the Republic of Cyprus from the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus . The border remains, but became more open in 2003.
However, you can't take a rent-a-car across the border, so we didn't visit the north. That's for another trip.
