Hôtel-Dieu, Beaune. Part of the heritage of the Hospices of Beaune, the Hôtel-Dieu was built in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin,
Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins. It is a rare example of civil architecture from the
middle ages. Since 1452 until the 20th century, the Sisters of the Hospices de Beaune have cared for the sick and the poor,
as well as nobles and the bourgois. Medical duties were transferred to a modern hospital in 1971.
The hospital was funded by proceeds from the wine-growing estate of the Hospices .
