The Pudong district of Shanghai – the financial and commercial centre. In the mid-20th century,
Pudong was the city’s poorest district, a squalid huddle of slums and brothels, run by gangsters.
In 1990 it acquired the status of Special Economic Zone, and has since become China’s financial
and commercial hub.
